Preparing Your Cat Guide

Everything you need to know for a safe, stress-free journey

Traveling with a cat—especially from Hawaii to the mainland—can feel overwhelming.
This guide will help you prepare your cat step-by-step so their journey is safe, calm, and successful.

1. Choose the Right Carrier

Your carrier is your cat’s safe space during travel.

  • Use an airline-approved soft carrier

  • Must fit under the seat in front of you

  • Ensure good ventilation on multiple sides

  • Add a familiar blanket or scent item

Tip: Let your cat get used to the carrier days before travel.

2. Feeding Guidelines

To prevent motion sickness and accidents:

  • Avoid food 10 hours before flight

  • Offer a small treat (like Churu) before leaving

  • Provide access to a litter box before departure

Hydration is important—offer small amounts of water if needed.

3. Should You Use Calming Aids?

Every cat is different.

Consult your vet about:

  • Mild calming supplements

  • Anti-anxiety medication (if needed)

  • Avoid sedating your cat without veterinary guidance

Many cats travel safely without medication.

4. Prepare for Accidents

Travel can be unpredictable.

  • Line carrier with double pee pads

  • Bring extra pads in your travel kit

  • Consider a light towel layer on top

5. Pack a Travel Kit

Have everything within reach:

  • Food & treats (Churu works great)

  • Extra pee pads

  • Wipes & paper towels

  • Disposable gloves

  • Small litter setup (for long layovers)

  • Ziplock bags for waste

Think: “What would I need if something goes wrong?”

6. TSA & Airport Security

This is one of the most important steps.

  • You will need to remove your cat from the carrier

  • Your cat must go through security in your arms or in a secure mesh bag

  • Carrier goes through the X-ray machine

Cats can get scared and try to run—always stay secure and calm.

7. Watch Our Step-by-Step Video

We highly recommend watching our training video before your flight.

8. Arrive Early

Give yourself extra time.

  • Arrive at least 2 hours before departure

  • Allow time for:

    • Check-in

    • Pet paperwork (if required)

    • TSA screening

Less stress for you = less stress for your cat.

Final Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • Stay calm—your cat feels your energy

  • Keep the carrier zipped at all times

  • Talk softly to reassure your cat

  • Avoid opening the carrier mid-flight
